Have data the moment you land

A travel eSIM gives your phone mobile data in Morocco as soon as the plane touches down: maps, ride apps and messages work at the airport, with no roaming bill and no SIM card to swap. Set it up at home in a few minutes; your own number keeps working for calls and texts.

  • · Usually far cheaper than your carrier's roaming pass
  • · Works on most phones from 2019 on (check your phone supports eSIM)

Before you go: Marrakech

What travellers ask about Marrakech, answered.

Which riad should I book?

Pick one in the medina (Kasbah or Ben Youssef area) with at least 8 reviews mentioning the hosts or staff. Avoid the massive ones near Jemaa el-Fnaa; smaller, 4-6 room riads are quieter and more personal. Budget 350-450 MAD a night for mid-range.

What's the best hammam experience?

Book a couple's package at your riad or through a local spa; it costs 250-400 MAD for two and includes the hot room, scrub, and massage. Public hammams are authentic but confusing for first-timers and women-only hours vary. March crowds mean private options are worth it.

Will the Atlas day trip be too touristy?

Most tours hit Imlil village and a Berber family lunch; it's fairly standard but the mountain views and culture are genuine. Book early March to beat crowds, and ask your operator if they do a smaller group (under 8 people) or a private option.

Do I need cash?

Yes. Many souks, small restaurants, and riads take only dirhams (cash). ATMs are everywhere in the new town; withdraw 500-800 MAD for your 4 days. Cards work in bigger restaurants and hotels but don't rely on it.

What's the weather like in Marrakech in March?

Expect 20-25°C (68-77°F) days and 10-12°C (50-54°F) nights. Pack layers, sunscreen, and a light jacket for evenings and mountain air.

Do people speak English in Marrakech?

Spoken here: Arabic (Darija dialect). French is widely spoken. English works in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants, but less so in small shops and the medina.

Useful phrases

• Salam alaikum (sah-LAHM ah-LAY-kum): hello (formal)

• Labas (lah-BAHS): hi, how are you (casual)

• Shukran (SHOO-krun): thank you

• Wahed kbira, wahed sgira (WAH-hed KBEE-rah, WAH-hed SGEE-rah): one large, one small

• Bslama (buh-slah-MAH): goodbye

Is Marrakech safe for visitors?

Marrakech is safe for tourists. Watch your bag in crowded souks and avoid wandering alone late at night.

What's the emergency number in Morocco?

Police 19 in cities (177 for the gendarmerie in the countryside). Ambulance and fire 15.

Do you tip in Morocco?

Tipping isn't obligatory but is appreciated. Round up restaurant bills or leave 10% for good service. Tip guides $5-10 per person for half-day trips.

What do only locals know about Marrakech?

• Book your riad in advance. The best ones fill up fast, and staying in one transforms the trip; they're peaceful oases away from the souks.

• The medina is a maze by design. Get lost for an hour, then ask for directions back to your riad or a landmark. You'll find better food stalls and quieter passages this way.

• Visit Jemaa el-Fnaa square early morning (before 10am) or after sunset. Midday is tourist chaos and snake charmers at their most aggressive.

• Hammams close to women after midday. Book yours for morning and expect to pay $5-10. Bring a towel or rent one there.
